3 WAYS TO REDUCE SHAVING IRRITATION AFTER GROOMING YOUR PUBIC AREA

Many men with sensitive skin give up on shaving their pubic area because of shaving irritation. Whether you’ve experienced razor burn in the pubic area, razor bumps, or chafing, shaving irritation is no fun. Luckily, shaving irritation doesn’t have to be a part of the intimate shaving experience. Keep reading for our guide on how to avoid razor burn and other types of shaving irritation in your pubic area.

What Causes Shaving Irritation?

Shaving irritation can be classified into three main categories: razor burn, razor bumps, and chafing.

  1. Razor burn – Burning, redness, stinging, itching – sound familiar? If you’ve ever experienced these symptoms after shaving, you’ve had razor burn.
  2. Razor bumps – Razor bumps are in-grown hairs that happen after shaving. They look like small pimples.
  3. Chafing – Like razor burn and razor bumps, chafing can look like a red rash with raised bumps. The difference is that chafing is caused by friction. Friction happens when your just-shaved (or just-trimmed) areas rub against each other or your clothing.

Now that you know which kind of shaving irritation you’re experiencing, read on for the solutions.

1. Avoid Razor Burn in Your Pubic Area

If you already have razor burn in your pubic area, seek out hydrating products formulated to calm irritated skin.

Of course, the best way to treat razor burn in your pubic area is to avoid it in the first place. The key to avoiding razor burn is to practice good shaving techniques (if you’re new to manscaping, check out our article on how to shave your pubic hair).

If you’re a soap and water kind of guy, using a shave cream can make a huge difference. Gillette Intimate Shave Cream + Cleanser has a gentle formula that hydrates sensitive skin while intimate shaving. It also helps clean your area while you shave – a win-win in our books.

2. Avoid Razor Bumps in Your Pubic Area

Besides practicing good shaving techniques (see above), there are a few more things you can do to avoid razor bumps in your pubic area:

1. Prep hair and skin with warm water.
Showering or bathing for 3-5 minutes in warm water before shaving can help to soften your skin and hair. This reduces the force needed to cut through your hair and makes for a more comfortable intimate shaving experience.

2. Exfoliate regularly.
Use a store-bought, fine grain exfoliator before shaving, or gently scrub the pubic area with a washcloth or loofah and a mild cleanser. This will help to ensure your skin's surface is free of dead skin cells which can sometimes trap hair as it grows back.

3. Use a sharp razor designed for intimate shaving.
A dull razor isn’t going to cut it (literally). With a sharp razor you will avoid nicks and cuts because the blades will not get caught and cause extra tugging on your pubic hair. The Gillette Intimate Razor for Men features Flexball technology that makes it easy to shave all those hard-to-reach areas.

4. Shave with the grain.
Shaving against the grain might result in a closer shave, but if you have sensitive skin, shaving with the grain can help to avoid razor bumps.

3. Help Prevent Chafing

The key to solving chafing is reducing friction in the affected area. Reduce friction by applying Gillette Intimate Pubic Anti-Chafing Stick to freshly-shaved areas, as well as any area where your skin rubs (like your thighs). Use daily, after showering, or before exercising to keep chafing at bay. Gillette Intimate Pubic Anti-Chafing Stick is easy-to-apply and mess-free. Razor burn, razor bumps, and chafing are issues for anyone who shaves their intimate area, but they especially affect those with sensitive skin.
