HOW TO CLEAN UP YOUR JAW AND NECKLINE

HOW TO CLEAN UP YOUR JAW AND NECKLINE

If you can’t make it to the barbershop, but you don’t want to lose your sharp look, you’ll need to know how to freshen up in-between visits. Perfecting your look at home is about more than just cleaning up your edges, it’s about helping you look your best, so that you can feel your best. Here are expert tips on how to clean your jawline and neckline from expert barbers who make up the Gillette Barber Council.

Let's start with your jawline.

To get started, you’ll need a sharp razor (preferably one with a single-blade precision trimmer on the back), some shave gel and a trimmer. Then, follow these easy steps:

Step 1: Apply a hot towel

Grab a wet towel and put it in the microwave for about 20 seconds. Then, press it to your face and the front of your neck to soften up the hair and the skin.

Step 2: Apply shaving cream

Apply shaving cream to the area you’d like to shave, right below your jawline. It’s always easier to shave more after your first pass, but if you take too much off, there’s no undo button, and you’ll have to pick a new style.

Step 3: Define your edge and shave

Use your razor to shave down the area right below your jawline. Once you’ve removed most of the hair, flip your razor over and use the single blade precision trimmer on the back to create a sharp line on your neck.

Now, it’s time for the tricky part, your neck:

To accurately trim your neck, you’re going to want a handheld mirror so you can see the area you’re working on. Here are some steps to getting a barber quality neck shave at home.

Step 1: Define your shape and set your line

First, decide what shape you want for the back of your hair. A square edge can add width to a thinner neck, while around edge will add balance to a thicker neck. Once you’ve decided, take the trimmer on the shortest setting and define your line.

Step 2: Add a hot towel

To open your pores, and reduce the risk of irritation and bumps, apply a hot towel to the back of your neck, just like you did on the front of it.

Step 3: Apply shave gel

Even though it’s not your face, you’ll still want to use a shave gel to soften hairs on your neck and help prevent irritation. Apply shave gel below the line you created, being sure to cover anywhere you’ll be shaving. Missing spots with shave gel can lead to irritation if they’re shaved over.

Step 4: Shave

In even, light strokes, shave right below the hairline you trimmed. Hold your hand mirror behind you to watch what you’re doing and make sure you’re not missing any spots.

Once you rinse off, you’ll be ready to get out there and show off your fresh look!
