The Lifecycle of Planet KIND Products

The Lifecycle of
Planet KIND Products

You’ll hear us talk a lot about how we make shaving and skincare products that are kind to your skin and the planet. But being kind to skin and the planet isn’t just a catchy phrase that’s perfect for a bumper sticker. It’s a mantra and set of principles that guides every decision, and product, we make. Today, let’s talk about the planet side of that coin. For us, it means finding ways to make our products sustainable and eco-friendly, even if it takes a little extra work on our end. For example, we use 85% post-consumer recycled plastic in our face wash and moisturizer, 95% post-consumer recycled paper in our razor and blade packaging, and 60% recycled plastic in our razor handle. Plus, when you purchase a Planet KIND product, you prevent 10 plastic bottles from entering the ocean through our partnership with Plastic Bank.

But making a sustainable product doesn’t just happen overnight. Like most good things (ex: a nice cup of coffee, getting your hair to do that thing you like), it takes time. Let’s take a look at how our products come to be, from raw materials to staples on your bathroom counter, and how you can help keep the sustainability loop going. And going.

How are the sustainable Planet KIND products made?

Step 1: From Trash to Treasure

Before you see them on the shelf as Planet KIND, most of the plastic materials that go into our products already had a former life as something else (e.g., butter tubs and yogurt cups) that were recycled by a kind person like you. The paper material we use in our packaging was also recycled, but we went a step further to ensure it’s also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council to have come from sustainably managed forests. Because we believe a little extra kindness goes a long way.

Step 2: The Treasure Is Separated

Okay, so we’ve recycled our trash. Now what? Once a recycling truck arrives at a recycling facility, the plastic goes through a process that separates out the reusable polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). These are fancy terms for certain types of plastic. Stay with us here.

Step 3: Turn Up the Heat

The raw recycled PP and HDPE packages are shredded, cleaned, melted and extruded into a pellets. These pellets are then used to mold new packaging. Then that plastic is shredded, melted and molded into the Planet KIND bottles you know and love. Fun fact: to reduce materials used, we print the label right on the bottle itself (well, it was a fun fact to us, at least).

Step 4: From Store to Counter

The final products get shipped to stores (or directly to you!) and then end up on your bathroom counter. They get used in skin-friendly ways, helping you shave, moisturize, and cleanse. Then, you recycle them through a local curbside recycling program or our partnership with TerraCycle. It’s quick and easy!

Step 5: The Cycle Continues

After the products have been recycled, they go back to the beginning of the cycle (step 1) where they’ll get separated into useful materials and made into new products. Then, hopefully, they’ll be used, recycled and reborn again and again. Another fun fact: Although recycled materials eventually lose their usefulness, the durable aluminum in our Protective Shave Cream can be recycled Infinitely.
