The Goatee simply refers to a small chin beard that looks like the facial hair on a billy goat. The cheeks and jawline are shaved, and a well-shaped chin beard remains. In today's world, a Goatee is often confused with a Circle Beard or Door Knocker, which connect a chin beard with a moustache.

As with most beards and moustaches, the trick is to grow more hair than you expect is needed in the style. That way there's some room for error and you can experiment with different shapes and goatee styles before you go too far and have to shave the whole thing and start over from the beginning. Shave down the cheek area and shave off the moustache (unless you want to add a moustache to the Goatee). Then, shape the Goatee on the chin and, if you want, the area of growth directly under the lip. Shave the excess and trim down around the edges, carefully watching for symmetry and smoothness. If you don't naturally have a clearly defined chin, you can use the hair at the bottom of the goatee to better define your chin, so let the hair grow as long as you need to at the bottom to disguise any double-chin action you might want to be covering up.
